There are many different variables to consider when selecting the correct equipment for your commercial gate. In today’s blog, we are going to go over things to consider when it comes time to decide what type of commercial gate operator would be best suited to your specific application.
- How many cycles per hour?
Different commercial gate operators will be recommended based on the volume of traffic they are expected to receive in a given time period. Typically this is measured in cycles per hour. Some operators have only 8 or 12 cycles per hour, while others are “continuous”. If you will have a constant flow of traffic, an operator with only 8 cycles per hour is not going to meet your needs.
- What kind of gates will it operate?
Consider weight, height, and also if the gates are sliding, sectional, or rolling. Weight matters, of course, because of the power of the motor you will need to have for the operator. A heavier gate will require a more powerful operating motor. Height should come into consideration because an 8 foot operator will not be able to open a 24 foot gate (you don’t want to find this out during installation!). Finally, the style of gate, sliding, sectional, or rolling, must also pair with the operator, as mis-matched components will not work.
- Are photo eyes included?
Most gate operators now include photos eyes. Photo eyes are sensors that detect the presence of traffic, especially vehicles. They act as a safety feature to prevent a gate from closing if there is an object in it’s path. If you have the option between a commercial gate operator that does not have photo eyes included, and one that does, we highly recommend choosing the latter.
