Bollards are an excellent solution for managing traffic, protecting commercial and industrial facilities, and controlling entry to high security facilities. Bollards can be constructed in plain or painted concrete, steel or aluminum and used to provide a protective and safety barrier between vehicles, pedestrians, and buildings.

Vehicle bollards can be permanent or removable and selecting which option is dependent upon your operations and factors including traffic, security, accident rate, and property beautification. Bollards can be installed as a fixed-in-place shield, or they can be automated to lower to street level when entry to a facility is authorized. Automatic bollards can be lowered or raised in as little as two seconds for high security facilities. Crash-rated bollards are regularly used in government facilities, airports, seaports, and locations where authorized entry is always required. These barriers come in both fixed and retractable options and materials are specified and approved by the Department of Defense (DOD).

Other vehicle bollards include architectural styles that are functional as well as decorative. Sign bollards are used in high traffic areas where permanent signs need to be displayed and collapsible bollards that allow emergency vehicles emergency access.

Like crash rated bollards, wedges are tested and certified by the Department of Defense, and they are the best solution for protecting facilities from unlawful high-speed vehicle entry.

The standards for these security solutions are specified and approved by the Department of Defense and can stop a 15,000-pound vehicle travelling at up to 50 miles per hour. New materials and creative technicians have brought security gates up a level to qualify the Department of Defense requirements as crash-rated gates. Some of the traditional gate types that are now available to withstand the impact of a 15,000-pound vehicle travelling at up to 50 miles per hour include:

• Crash-rated cantilever gates: These can be constructed from aluminum and operated manually or with traditional operators.
• Crash-rated reinforced slide gates: These can be installed in difficult locations using steel tubes or bollards filed with cement.
• Crash-rated reinforced vertical lift gates: These are massive structures requiring a heavy load bearing roller chain, counter chains, engineered footings and concrete filled steel bollards.

Any of these crash-rated gate solutions may be combined with customizable automation and electric gate components to increase security including control panels, remote control panels, audio alarms, traffic signals and battery back-up systems.

High speed gates can be combined with crash-rated solutions to provide maximum security.
